The Costume and Textile Association celebrates how women boosted morale in the 1940s through fashion, hair and makeup. Learn more and take a selfie in period- style clothing at our stand in the Forum.

Wartime austerity and rationing meant life was not easy for the women of Britain, but they showed remarkable resilience and creativity to make life a little brighter and keep spirits high. Wedding dresses were made from parachute silk, lipstick from beetroot juice, legs were browned and stocking seams sketched on. During the War 50,000 American Servicemen (and women) were stationed at bases in Norfolk. The Costume and Textile Association invite you to learn more about the effect this 'Friendly Invasion' and Hollywood movies had on the fashion, make-up and hairstyles of Norfolk women. Come along and take a selfie in period-style clothing at their stand in the Forum.
