Living in the Abbey – A Creative Workshop for Young Explorers

The Guildhall, Guildhall Square, Abbey Place, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 0FW

  • 20 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Step back in time this Heritage Open Days with a special hands-on workshop for primary school children, set in the atmospheric Courtroom of Tavistock’s historic Guildhall.

Inspired by the daily life of medieval monks and townsfolk, children can explore three fun activities: discover the sweet secrets of beekeeping and create a colourful paper-plate chart of a bee’s life cycle; try their hand at calligraphy by designing their own illuminated manuscript in medieval style; and learn about the herbs that flavoured the Abbey’s kitchens before planting a seed to grow at home.

There may also be a chance to help build a model of the Abbey itself — a perfect way to imagine what Tavistock once looked like.

This is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about local heritage through creativity, taking home both new knowledge and their own mini masterpieces.

Bring your budding historians and artists along for a memorable morning of discovery!
