Lost (and Found) Theatres of Colchester
Firstsite, Lewis Gardens, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1JH
Today Colchester is renowned for the Mercury Theatre, a professional theatre which opened in 1972 and has recently been refurbished, and Headgate Theatre, a 'little gem of a theatre' which has been welcoming visiting amateur and professional groups since 2002. But the city once had many more venues, including the Theatre Royal in Queen Street, which burnt down in 1918 after more than a century of use, The Playhouse Theatre in St John's Street, now a Wetherspoons, and the Hippodrome in the High Street, today better known as the Trilogy Nightclub.
This tour by historian Dorian Kelly will explore how our ancestors spent their leisure time at the theatre.
