Loughborough Central Station (Great Central Railway) - Part of the Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend.
Great Central Railway - Loughborough Central Station, Great Central Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1RW
Explore Loughborough Central Station buildings and their 126 years of history.
Loughborough Central includes some impressive architectural features, including a large glass canopy which is believed to be the largest such structure on a preserved railway line. The station has been lovingly restored to its former glory and our original station buildings are presented as they would have appeared during the 1950s and 60s, including two Waiting Rooms, a Refreshment Room, and there is a also a Museum.
Loughborough Central Station opened on 15th March 1899, as part of the Great Central Railway's "London Extension" which linked Annesley in Nottinghamshire to the GCR's new London terminus station at Marylebone. The line operated as part of the national railway network until closure on 5th May 1969. A group of committed and determined volunteers had decided to save a section of the former Great Central line, and the first preserved steam train ran in 1973 to Quorn & Woodhouse Station, and later to Rothley and a new station at Leicester North. The GCR operates today as a visitor attraction, staffed primarily by volunteers. Great Central Railway PLC is a not-for-profit company which is backed by a supporting charity.
We are pleased to open the public areas of the station as part of the Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend. Train travel is NOT included, but train tickets can be purchased on the day for any visitors wishing to travel.
