Loughborough Central Station Tours
Great Central Railway, Great Central Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1RW
Loughborough Central includes some impressive architectural features, including a large glass canopy which is believed to be the largest such structure on a preserved railway line. The station has been lovingly restored to its former glory and our original station buildings are presented as they would have appeared during the 1950s and 60s, including two Waiting Rooms, a Refreshment Room, and there is a also a Museum.
Loughborough Central Station opened on 15th March 1899, as part of the Great Central Railway's "London Extension" which linked Annesley in Nottinghamshire to the GCR's new London terminus station at Marylebone. The line operated as part of the national railway network until closure on 5th May 1969. . The GCR operates today as a visitor attraction, staffed primarily by volunteers. Great Central Railway is a not-for-profit company which is backed by a supporting charity.
We are pleased to open the public areas of the station as part of the Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend. Train travel is NOT included, but train tickets can be purchased on the day for any visitors wishing to travel.
Free Guided Tours take place on both days at 13:10 - spaces are limited and must be booked on the day at the Stationmasters office.

The UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway, the Great Central Railway exists today after a group of determined volunteers in 1969, saved the line following its closure by British Rail to recreate the experience of a main line steam railway for generations to come. Today we proudly cherish and develop their legacy as a contemporary visitor attraction that’s open all year running steam and heritage diesel locomotives, as well as heritage railcars to educate and entertain our visitors whilst preserving the story of the railway.
