Love Lane
1 Savile Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX1 3TZ
Love Lane is ancient footpath which ran from Holywell Lane to Wadham College wall, then north to the Parks. It was upgraded in 1755 to become a university walk; its unofficial name in the 18-19C presumably denoted its popularity with courting couples. Jowett Walk and Savile Road covered the path in the late 19C and the remaining section between Savile Road and South Parks Road, still shown as ‘Love Lane’ on contemporary maps was closed off to the public, probably around 1910.

Love Lane is a dirt track with uneven surfaces. Walking shoes are strongly recommended. Unfortunately, the route is not advised for anyone with walking difficulties or accessibility needs. Because of the uneven terrain, Wadham College reserves the right to call off the walk if the weather conditions are adverse.
Six guided walks at 1000, 1100, 1200, 1400, 1500, and 1600 Each walk should take about 15 minutes. There will be a limit of 20 people allowed on each walk on a ‘first come, first served basis’. The walk will begin at Savile Road and participants can leave at the northern end at South Parks Road, or return to Savile Road. Oxford City Ramblers will be supporting this project and it is hoped that their website will provide information about it.
