Malling Deanery Arboretum tour
St Michael the Archangel Church, Church Lane, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 2JL
Join members of the Trees Committee of Friends of Lewes for a guided walk around an interesting collection of almost one hundred native and exotic trees, including unusual examples such as a venerable Black Poplar and a Hybrid Wingnut. The trees, largely planted in the 1970s, are in a private garden that used to be part of the grounds of Malling Deanery. They make a valuable contribution to our arboretum town and thanks are due to the owners for permission to visit their grounds.
The walk will be led by Peter Thurman, a member of The Trees Committee. Peter is a Kew-trained landscape and garden designer with forty years ' experience, he is also a published author, writer and teacher. He is a fellow of the Arboricultural Association and the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and has chartered status in trees, forestry, horticulture and the environment.
Now retired and living in North Chailey, Peter has worked abroad as far afield as Italy, Japan, Dubai, Hong Kong, Finland, Germany, France and Belgium. He taught, and was an external examiner at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and was for many years a tutor and lecturer at the Inchbald School of Design and the London College of Garden Design. He still writes regularly for various professional journals and magazines and is in demand as a speaker at conferences, seminars and workshops.

The walk is unsuitable for people with mobility issues as it involves uneven ground. All participants are requested to wear stout and waterproof footwear and have protective clothing should inclement weather be encountered. Much of the site has established ground vegetation and therefore for everyone's comfort it is recommended that the temptation to wear shorts is resisted.
