Matlock Moor Methodist Church
Quarry Lane, Chesterfield Road, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 5LG
Open day and exhibition telling the story of Matlock Moor Methodist Church (1903) designed by local architect Davis M Wildgoose and built by the family firm of J W Wildgoose and Sons on land donated by Walter Statham, owner of Brickyard Farm. The building is typical of local Wildgoose chapels in late-Victorian style. It was sensitively refurbished in 2018, retaining original furnishings and features including "chapel hat pegs".
The exhibition on Saturday and Sunday will tell the story of the chapel, formerly Primitive Methodist, and display many objects associated with the Primitive Methodist Church.
The event also includes a talk on Friday about the adjacent brickyard, closed at about the time the chapel opened, and the sequence of kilns long since lost to view which were uncovered in a spectacular excavation in 2024. The speaker was instrumental in ensuring that the site was fully explored in advance of housing development and closely followed and photographed the course of the excavation.
Light refreshments will be available at all events, including soup-and-a-roll at lunchtime on Saturday. On Sunday there will also be refreshments after the Sunday service starting at 10.30am and lasting about an hour.
