Medieval Mysteries: The Story of Exeter Cathedral's Votives

Ever wondered what a votive is? Or why Exeter Cathedral has the only complete medieval wax votive figure in Europe? These mysterious items were part of daily life at the Cathedral in the 1400s. Come along on a tour to find out what votives are, why they were used, and see a real life votive inside our Treasures Exhibition. Our expert guides will take you on a journey through the Cathedral and the Treasures Exhibition, sharing the story of the building and the everyday histories it holds. In addition to the votives our Treasures Exhibition has on display some of the rare and ancient artefacts from our Library and Archives collection, including the Exeter Book and Exon Domesday.

Accessibility details

Step-free access is available throughout most of the Cathedral at ground level. Please check our Special Tours page for accessibility restrictions on specific guided tours. Accessible toilets are available both in the Cathedral and Cloister Gallery, and can be reach via step-free access. These toilet facilities are also gender neutral, and have baby changing facilities as well as a family WC. The Friends’ Cloister Gallery and Treasures Exhibition can be accessed via a staircase or a lift.
