Meet the 'Residents' Walk & Talk
St Augustine of Canterbury Church, Front Street, Alston, Cumbria, CA9 3QW
The parish church of St. Augustine’s, like all churches in Britain, has a long history, possibly going back to Anglo Saxon times. The church today is the third one on the site, the first was Norman, the second, designed by John Smeaton, lasted only 100 years, while the present church was built in 1869. A walk outside around the church yard reveals the occupants of the graves as people, not just names on headstones.
Meet outside the church door.
After the talk, visit the Grade II listed church, built 1870, and the Derwentwater carillon lock inside, stained glass, and beautiful memorials.
