Join us for a special talk presented by Weston Museum's Community & Heritage Officer, Jane Hill. The talk will take place within the chapel itself so spaces will be limited, with booking recommended.

Designed in 1856 by Mr Charles Davies, the Milton Road Cemetery was designed as a Victorian Garden Cemetery, with an arboretum of native and exotic trees and pathways to lead you round grounds to enjoy the spectacular views the cemetery has to offer.

Two charming neo-14th century gothic chapels were built in pink limestone quarried on site, with buff Bath stone for mouldings for Church of England and non-Conformist services, though the latter was demolished in 1980. The surviving tower surmounted by an octagonal spire houses the chapel bell and was deliberately aligned in front of the top entrance gate.

Some of the trees planted in the cemetery at the time can still be seen today. The atlas cedar, stone pine, lucombe oak and a monkey puzzle tree are a few of those still standing.

In 1917 the cemetery was extended down to Milton Road. Weston-super-Mare Town Council took over ownership of the cemetery in October 2003 and the Town Council has worked hard to improve the cemetery grounds.

The cemetery is open daily and is well worth exploring. Heritage Open Days offer a rare opportunity for the general public to see the lovely interior of the chapel, perhaps combined with a stroll around the cemetery grounds.

Accessibility details

There is level access into the Chapel and limited car parking is available immediately outside, or on Lower Bristol Road. The chapel is not large enough to accommodate scooters. The Cemetery is on a hill and contains many steps but most parts of the cemetery can be reached on sloping paths, although some are steep and care is needed to negotiate them safely. We regret there are no toilets available.
