Along side the Hinton Mill open days we will be giving tours of the the Ancient Monument in the field next to the mill. Site was abandoned in the 16th C and slowly demolished for its stone and tiles, It was a stop off house for the Earls of Devon.

The site shows the mill and fish pond - necessary for the strict Catholic diet at the time. We will be showing some of the carved stones and tiles from the house. The late Mick Aston visited the site and was shocked by the quality of its construction and size, with roof tiles bought all the way from Cornwall. It was described as a palace not a manor house.
The Courtenays were cousins of Henry VIII and fell due yo their objection to the divorce, The King had the Earl and his son imprisoned in the Tower of London and confiscated the title and estates.
You will be able to walk the site and try to imagine the building as home to a cousin of King Henry VIII, see and walk in the deep moat - now dry and work out where the chapel, Great House, Stables Barn, and Dovehouse may have stood.
