Moseley Park & Pool

What we now call Moseley Park was originally part of the Moseley Hall estate owned by first the Grevis and then the Taylor families. In 1792 landscape designer Humphry Repton produced one of his Red Books for John Taylor II. He illustrated how his estate, on a hill overlooking the growing industrial town of Birmingham, could be transformed. He recommended enlarging some small pools to create a lake and planting trees to obscure the views of smoky Birmingham. Later generations of the family increased their fortunes by selling off the land to people wanting to move out of Birmingham and up the hill to where the air was cleaner and the drinking water safer. The Taylors sold large building plots and the families who had houses built in Chantry and Salisbury Roads enjoyed having part of the remaining parkland enclosed by their gardens. To prevent the Taylors from filling in the pool and building more houses they formed a Private Company and negotiated a lease. It took 50 years to gain the freehold and another 50 to transform the Company into a Charitable Trust and save the hidden park. Bring a picnic and spend time exploring.
