Mullins House/Coffee Shop
58 West Street, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 1BS
The building is best known as the former home of William Mullins, one of the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed aboard the Mayflower to America in 1620. Between 1612 and 1620, William Mullins lived and worked here as a shoemaker and merchant before leaving Dorking in search of religious freedom and new opportunities in the New World.
Although William Mullins sadly died during the first winter in Plymouth Colony, his daughter Priscilla survived and later married fellow Mayflower passenger John Alden. Their descendants remain closely connected to this story today.
Since taking over Mullins Coffee Shop in 2016, we have welcomed many descendants of Priscilla Mullins and John Alden from the United States. In 2019, we visited the Alden family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and developed a warm relationship with the Alden Kindred of America and the Mayflower Society.
In October 2025, Dorking & District Town Twinning Association (DDTTA) and the Town of Duxbury officially signed a Sister Towns Partnership Agreement, strengthening the historic connection between Dorking and Duxbury.
Visitors will be able to view historical displays, learn about the Mayflower connection, and enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional independent coffee shop at the heart of the community. You can see the shop where Mullins used to make the shoes, the original stairs to the flat above (not accessible), original fireplace and wall.
Coffee shop access only.
