Music and History at Charlton Church
St Alphege Road, Charlton, Dover, Kent, CT16 2PU
St Peter and St Paul’s, Charlton-in-Dover, Grade II*, will be open from 9am till 12 noon. It is blessed with a superb acoustic for music, like other Gothic-revival churches designed by the eminent 19th century architect James Brooks. The church’s numerous concerts, in particular the Charlton Fine Arts recital series, take full advantage of this! The acoustic will be show-cased throughout the morning with recordings of music from across the ages, and there will be a chance to hear the sweet-toned historic Bevington organ.
The walkaround guide will reveal how the present church, known as ‘the cathedral of Dover’, replaced an ancient building nearer to the River Dour, and will show how it retains its links with that earlier church, as well as with other Dover churches no longer standing. You will find out about Charlton’s famous prisoner-priest and how he played his part in shaping the Church of England of today. Charlton was shelled during WW2: will you spot the one remaining sign of the damage?
The church has an austere beauty and some lovely stained glass. Take some time to notice the admirable details of Brooks’ design, while listening to beautiful music. Refreshments will be available.
