St George Colegate, St George’s Street, Norwich, Norfolk, NR3 1DA
Visitors will be able to explore the historic church of St George's Church, Colegate and learn more about its rich architectural, musical and community heritage. Short talks on the history of the church and its monuments, its significance within Norwich, and the current restoration project will take place at 11.00, 12.30 and 14.30. Heritage displays and interpretation materials will help tell the story of the building, its repair needs and future plans. While restoration works are being planned, the church is no longer open daily, making this a rare opportunity to visit the building outside of regular services and community events.
The church will also provide a welcoming stopping place for participants in the Norfolk Churches Trust Bike Ride, Walk & Drive. Refreshments and drinks will be available throughout the day, offering everyone an opportunity to rest and enjoy the atmosphere of this historic building.
There will also be live organ music on the remarkable Georgian organ, built by George Pike in 1802, and recognised as an instrument of historic importance. The organ is closely associated with Norwich’s rich musical tradition and is believed to have been used for the city’s first performance of Handel’s Messiah. See the St George Colegate facebook page for exact timings.
