Nailsworth Clock Tower
Nailsworth Clock Tower, George Street, Nailsworth, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, GL6 0AG
The Grade II listed Clock Tower is located within a floral garden at the meeting point of the main roads in Nailsworth. It is frequently illuminated for special events such as the Queen's Jubilee and is also decorated with Poppies for Remembrance Day. The present Town Clock was completed in 1952 as a War Memorial and replaced an earlier clock which was mounted in a temporary wooden tower beside the road below St George's church. This earlier clock was damaged beyond repair during the Second World War and subsequently removed, and the remains of the steel reinforcing girders for the old tower can still be seen beside the A46 opposite Mortimer Gardens. The new clock, by Gillett and Johnston, has an electrically wound mechanical movement, with electrically operated quarter-hour chimes and hour strikes, the bells being from the original clock. The clock mechanism is located at the bottom of the tower and the three bells are mounted upside down on steel girders just above the clock. The sound from the bells is directed up the empty tower and then sideways and slightly upwards out of four slots at the top. This ensures that the bells can be heard from a reasonable distance away from the town centre without being excessively loud near the clock tower.
