Newbegin House
Newbegin House, Newbegin, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8EG
Newbegin House, a grade II listed building, was built in 1746 by Derek Gee on the site of a medieval property and there are timbers in the front wall which may date from the earlier property but are hidden by a later brick facing. It has over forty rooms, including thirteen bedrooms, three kitchens, two utility rooms, five cellars, a library, four staircases, a Coach House and several outbuildings.
Of particular interest architecturally are the main staircase which may have come from an earlier house, the imposing side entrance on the west elevation which incorporates oak pillars from Beverley Minster and which was erected in the 1820s, the brick arches in the yard on the east elevation, the front gate pillars made by William Crossbill in the 1820s and the recently constructed orangery at the at the back of the house, which closely resembles the one in the walled garden at Wassand Hall. One of the former owners Lt. Col. Teavil Appleton who lived at Newbegin House between 1760 and 1800 supplied pineapples to Sledmere House.
