Newent Market House Museum
Newent Market House, Market Square, Newent, Gloucestershire, GL18 1AH
Usually only open Saturday afternoons from Easter to the end of September, we’ll be welcoming visitors every afternoon during the Heritage Open Days, between 1330 and 1600. NOTE: Access is by a flight of stairs only. Newent Market House displays include printed history boards telling the story of Newent from the Bronze Age, Roman and right up to the 21st Century, and many artefacts found locally.
The archaeological finds are fascinating and a delight to visitors. In addition, we have a collection of books for younger visitors, publications by local history groups in nearby villages on display, and a room devoted to celebrating local music-making. This last includes details of the life of innovative early pop musician Joe Meek, who was born in Newent's Market Square, and also about Rutland Boughton, a choral and classical music composer who lived locally.
