North Lees Hall Open Day

North Lees Hall was constructed around the late 1590s by William Jessop of Broomhall, Sheffield; the architecture having probably been influenced by Robert Smythson. In 1845, when visiting her friend Ellen Nussey in Hathersage, Charlotte Bronte was shown around the Hall by George Eyre, the then tenant, and would have heard stories about the Eyre family. Thus North Lees Hall probably contributed to the inspiration for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre, published in 1847. The Hall was extensively restored by Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Beech in the 1960s.

The site is across various levels with steps and uneven surfaces in parts.

Additional information

Accessibility: Unfortunately, access to the Hall beyond the ground floor is very difficult for those with limited mobility. Restricted toilet facilities are available at the Hall/Site with wheelchair access toilet facilities located a short drive away at Hollin Bank. The Hall will have scaffolding present at the time of the Open Day, for high level repointing works.
