Discover Norwich High School for Girls, which has been situated on Newmarket Road since 1933. A fine example of a suburban Regency Villa, the buildings retain many original features including stunning architrave.

Set within 14 acres of grounds near the centre of the city, Norwich High School for Girls has been situated on Newmarket Road since 1933, having initially been established on Monday, February 22nd 1875 at Churchman House in St Giles, Norwich. In 1876 the School moved to the Assembly House, a home for the School praised by Miss Wise, Headmistress in 1925; “surely few girls’ schools can boast of more remarkable, more interesting, or more beautiful buildings. I do not say more convenient: but the inconvenience is part of the charm”. Despite the charm, a new age required new buildings. In particular, the demand for outdoor space for sports and indoor space for science led the School first to Stafford House in 1932 and then to Eaton Grove in 1933. It is in these fine nineteenth century dwellings, amongst playing fields, wooded paths, four period properties and new purpose-built school buildings that Norwich High School for Girls lives today. A fine example of a suburban Regency Villa, Eaton Grove once belonged to the Boultons of Boulton and Paul. The buildings retain many original features including a Crinkle Crankle wall and stunning architrave – particularly in the stunning Jameson Library. Visitors will be able to tour the site and can also explore the school’s extensive archive.
