This talk will look at the shawl industry from the ‘Weaver’ to the ‘Wearer’. It will show how the desire by the ‘fashionista’s of the time to wear and own an expensive imported Kashmiri shawl in the 1790’s led to a flourishing industry.

Helen Kennett, who is based in Norfolk, is a textile researcher who specialises in researching Norwich’s rich textile history, in particular the history of ‘Norwich Shawls’ which were a world leading product for over 100 years from the 1790’s to the 1870’s.
She was fortunate to work with Pamela Clabburn as a museum volunteer in the 1960’ at Strangers Hall Museum, in Norwich. Her inspiration to take up to carry out her research came from both Pamela Clabburn and her colleague Helen Hoyte, who were keen to research, preserve and promote them.
