Heritage detective Sundeep Braich attended the press preview of Kensington Palace's exhibition 'The Last Princesses of Punjab'. In this Heritage Open Days talk Sundeep explores Princesses Bamba, Catherine and Sophia Duleep Singh, who are centre stage in this major exhibition. They are the three daughters from Maharajah Duleep Singh's first marriage and family (he had a second marriage and family that issued two further daughters: Princesses Pauline and Irene Duleep Singh).
The talk takes a deep dive into the stories at centre stage in Kensington Palace:
- Princess Bamba Duleep Singh's claim to being 'The Queen of Punjab' and the last surviving member of the Duleep Singh family. Years 1869-1957.
- Princess Catherine Duleep Singh, who has since become a lesbian icon and is celebrated as a suffragist and for helping Jewish refugees escape the Nazis. Years 1871-1942. (LGBTQ+ event)
- Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, better known as Queen Victoria's goddaughter, a suffragette fighting for women's rights and a wartime nurse. Years 1876-1948.
