One Parish- Wellington Christ Church
Wellington Christ Church, New Church Road, Wellington, Telford, Shropshire, TF1 1JX
We will be compiling information on Everyday Histories from within the local community, hopefully gaining a real personal insight into life during the industrial expansion… A great heritage resource on our doorstep.
Wellington evolved from a traditional market town into a Victorian manufacturing hub for agricultural machinery (Haynes & Bromley) & the Wrekin Foundry manufacturing iron goods - supported by the railway expansion & the canal network linking ironworks & coalfields to the River Severn at the Ironbridge Gorge, (known as the birthplace of the industrial revolution now a UNESCO Heritage site & just 6miles away).
There will be some evidence of the history of Christ Church from its completion in 1838 when the surrounding area was very different to today.. then standing alone on a hill surrounded by wide open spaces…. The church having been subjected to a number of internal architectural alterations in its 187yr history is now in the heart of a residential area. It’s raised location makes it easier to spot from a distance, almost hidden from view as you get closer.
A great opportunity to view the amazing architecture outside & inside, including the stained-glass windows, font & other interesting aspects. There will be some printed information & an I-Spy leaflet for the young at heart….
