Opening Windows on Hellesdon’s Architecture
The Vicarage, Broom Avenue, Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk, NR6 6LG
St Paul is a most unusual church. It sits in the heart of a maze of residential streets in the centre of Hellesdon. The frontage is an elegant seven-edged red brick semicircle, but it is only when you go behind this that you see the facade has been added to a dark green corrugated iron Nissen hut. This provides a distinctive setting for this year's Heritage Open Day.
Hellesdon has a fantastic range of buildings, from the Medieval Church on the Low Road, to the Italianate Hellesdon Hall. The Victorian Hospital, the 1930s Bull Pub, and the 70s Community Centre all tell unique stories. Sadly, there are buildings and amenities that were important to the area but have been lost in time, such as the Speedway track. We will explore as many as we can and give space for you to share your stories.
This year we are bringing a range of photos, displays, materials, and models to explore Hellesdon's architectural heritage. There will be magazines from local schools, information on some of those who served from Hellesdon in World War Two, Historic maps, a diorama of a V-2 rocket such as the one that hit Hellesdon in 1944, and much more.
We also have activities. From drawing, and colouring in, to making your own flags and designing the Hellesdon of the Future.
Teas and coffees will be provided by St Paul's Church
