Step inside Holmfirth’s Grade II listed 1894 Technical Institute. Explore its history and transformation into a community-owned venue – the place to go for arts, learning, wellbeing and enterprise.

Explore “Our Place, Our Stories @ The Tech” through a series of engaging displays and informal activities bringing the building’s history to life. Discover how the Technical Institute supported local industry and education, and how it has been preserved and reimagined by the community since 2018.

Visitors can browse exhibition panels covering different eras of the building’s past, alongside interactive elements designed to encourage memories, conversations and shared stories. A dedicated display will explore the historic Graveship of Holme and its significance to the local area.

Friendly volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to welcome visitors, answer questions and share insights into both the building’s heritage and its current role. There will also be opportunities to find out how to get involved, whether through volunteering, attending activities or supporting the ongoing work of this community-owned building.

Suitable for all ages, with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, this is a chance to connect with local history, meet others, and experience a unique heritage space at the heart of Holmfirth.

Directions:
Holmfirth Tech is located on the outskirts of Holmfirth town centre, a short walk from the bus station and local amenities. The building is clearly signposted from Huddersfield Road, just off the A6024 Woodhead Road. Limited on-site parking is available, with additional public car parks nearby. Please allow extra time to park, particularly during busy periods. The main entrance is at the front of the building. Step-free access is available via the rear entrance — please follow signage or ask a volunteer for assistance. Facilities, including toilets, are available on site. Friendly volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to guide visitors and answer any questions.

Accessibility details

The building has two entrances: the main front entrance and a rear entrance, which provides step-free access. Visitors requiring step-free access are advised to use the rear entrance, where signage will be in place. An historic Grade II listed building, fully accessible with a lift and stairs between floors. Accessible toilet facilities are available on site. Seating is available throughout the building, but visitors may be standing or walking for periods while exploring. If you have specific access requirements or would like to discuss your visit in advance, please contact us.

Additional information

This is a free, drop-in event with no booking required—visitors are welcome to arrive at any time between 10am and 3pm and explore at their own pace. The day will have a relaxed, informal feel, with exhibition displays and opportunities to chat with volunteers. Suitable for all ages, including families. Please allow time to explore the building, as displays will be spread across different areas. Refreshments may be available on site (subject to confirmation). We encourage visitors to share their own memories or connections to the building and local area. Assistance dogs only.
