Enjoy the beauty of this spectacular Abbey Church, learn about its history, enjoy the sound of its wonderful Ruffati organ, join a tour of the tower and the amazing views of the area, and relax with tea and cake. Dogs welcome on a lead.

Built in the 11th Century as the church of an important Benedictine monastery, the Abbey Church of the Holy Cross has survived fires, storms and earthquakes and the demolition of its Nave and chapels during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540. The surviving quire is now the main body of the church, with magnificent "ploughshare" vaulting, erected to replace the roof destroyed when the tower collapsed in a fire in 1288.
Its impressive stained glass windows are the product of restoration work carried out in 1862-4 by the renowned church architect George Gilbert Scott. Its peel of 8 bells is rung every week from the unique ringing platform, also installed by Gilbert Scott when opening up the stunning lantern tower.. The wonderful Rufatti pipe organ, installed in 2023, is attracting admiration from church musicians across the country. Members of the Abbey community will be on hand all day to show visitors around and answer questions. The organ will be played at times during the day. Tower Tours will be available, to be booked on the day on arriving at the Abbey.
