Pilgrim Trail: Bradwell Abbey Family Friendly Walk
Meet outside the Cruck Barn, MK City Discovery Centre, Bradwell Abbey, Alston Drive, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK13 9AP
Join Nicky Kenny for a short, guided heritage stroll along a small section of the Milton Keynes’ Pilgrim Trail which was developed in 2019. The Pilgrim Trail is an 8 mile linear walk from Tattenhoe Church (which has many stones from the original Snelshall Priory site) to the chapel of St Mary at Bradwell Abbey, the site and remains of a medieval Benedictine Priory. This Scheduled Ancient Monument is nationally significant because it contains the greater part of the medieval precinct of a priory, a relatively unusual survival, with a rare standing building - a dedicated pilgrimage chapel with a scheme of stunning contemporary wall paintings. The chapel will be open to the public to view the paintings as part of the on site Medieval open day taking place from 11:00 - 15:00. The walk will begin at 2pm outside the chapel but do arrive earlier to take in the medieval festivities.
Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather. Some of the route is along a track and therefore may be muddy if it has been raining.
After exploring the chapel of St Mary we will make our way to the famous Concrete Cows and then onwards to Bancroft Roman Villa. We will then return to Bradwell Abbey, walking around Bradwell recreation ground and then underneath the railway line, through the tunnel along the wooden bridge and back to the medieval site of Bradwell Abbey. For more information about the route and The Pilgrim Trail check out the MK Trails app.
