Numbers are limited so pre-booking is essential for this unique historical experience
We will look at the graves of some people of particular interest and become aware of how burial practices have changed over the years. We will also note some of the symbols engraved on the older headstones. We will consider the War Graves at the cemetery and visit the Green Burial Area and a plot where the re-interred bodies of the nuns from the Carmelite Convent are buried.
Courtesy of Tavistock Town Council we will have rare access to the buildings including the Chapel of Rest and the Old Mortuary, designed by Henry Clutton who was also the architect responsible for what is now the Catholic Church.
The cemetery is a vital part of Tavistock’s unique architectural heritage — another piece of the Bedford estate’s legacy, expertly shaped by one of Victorian England’s leading architects.
