Portsmouth Cathedral: Specialist Organ Tour

For Heritage Open Days 2026, we are happy to announce that we will be offering a selection of our Specialist Tours for free!

Often perceived as a modern building, the Cathedral's history dates back to the 12th century. Join us as we delve into the architectural timeline of Portsmouth Cathedral, from the 12th-century chapel to the 'new' 1990s west end.

Following our weekly lunchtime concert, Lunchtime Live (1310 - 1400), we will be exploring Portsmouth Cathedral’s Organ, and how this instrument not only plays a key part in today's worship but also contributes to the architecture of the building.

When booking our Organ Tour, please read the accessibility information. Please note that the Visitor Safety Instructions will need to be read and agreed to before the start of the tour.

Any tour is subject to an event beyond the Cathedral’s reasonable control renders a tour impossible or impractical. If the tour has been booked, the Cathedral will contact the party as soon as possible to communicate this cancellation or amendment. The Cathedral is not liable for any charges incurred from travel, pre-booked or not, if a tour has been cancelled.

Accessibility details

The route up the Organ, behind the organ and the Organ trumpets consists of the following potential hazards: 35 steps to the Organ Gallery with fixed handrail. 37cm wide and 180cm tall door. Followed by a narrow walkway, the narrowest part being 33cm wide. Fixed parts of the organ on the floor, some measuring 14cm high, to step over. 51 steps to the Organ trumpets with a fixed handrail. The tour is not suitable for those with fear of confined spaces, height or with mobility or breathing or other related health issues.
