Potteric Carr Nature Reserve is well-known as a place for nature but it is also a place of history. It has been a reserve since 1968.
Old railways line criss-cross the reserve.
As part of the Heritage Days for the weekend of 19th and 20th September you can stroll for 10 minutes or two hours at the reserve without having to pay the entry fee. There are over five miles of signposted paths, mostly shaded by our beautiful leafy trees. It never feels crowded. Enjoy the views as reedbeds sway gently under big open skies. Kingfishers have been sighted recently.
Potteric Carr’s different habitats allow hundreds of different and characterful mushrooms and toadstools to thrive and a lot will be visible during the open weekend.
If you're bringing children we've explorer backpack available to hire so they can look for bugs, butterflies and more around the reserve.
After you have finished exploring come to the cafe for a freshly baked scone, Bev’s famous chips or a good old bacon butty. The café is ideally situated overlooking our main pond you may spot a bird or two when you enjoy your brew.
Our wildlife is so precious and protected, rare plants and fungi grow here while birds shelter and nest on the ground. We also have some grazing sheep and you might spot a Highland cow! We hope you understand therefore why this is a dog-free place, they are not allowed on the reserve.

- Directions:
- By car: From Doncaster take the White Rose Way (A6182), at the roundabout follow the directions for the M18. Potteric Carr Nature Reserve is signposted. From the A1 (southbound) come off at Junction 35 for the M18, then take Junction 3 towards Doncaster and follow signs for the A6182 (White Rose Way). At the first set of lights you reach, turn right into Mallard Way. Park at the visitor centre car park. By public transport: The nearest train station is Doncaster From here you can catch the X11 or 372 bus. Journey time approx. 15 minutes.
