An engaging exhibition exploring the transformation of women’s daily routines from labour-intensive domestic life to modern, technology-driven lifestyles. Through displays and artefacts, it highlights how social change, innovation and shifting expect

This exhibition explores the dramatic evolution of women’s daily routines across the last century, reflecting wider social, economic and technological change.
In the early 20th century, women’s lives were largely defined by physically demanding domestic work and time-consuming beauty routines, shaped by strong social expectations. Household tasks were carried out manually, often requiring significant effort and time each day.
The introduction of household appliances in the late 20th century marked a major turning point. Technologies such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners and microwaves reduced the burden of domestic labour, enabling many women to enter the workforce. Despite this progress, women often continued to balance employment with responsibility for home life.
In the 21st century, digital technology and automation have further transformed daily routines. Smart devices, online services and mobile technology now support the management of work, family and personal life, offering greater flexibility and efficiency.
Through a range of display materials, this exhibition highlights how innovation and social change have reshaped domestic life and women’s roles, offering insight into both the progress made and the continuing evolution of everyday routines.
