A powerful poetry reading evening inspired by the many untold stories of Black people connected to St Alfege Church through the centuries.

Join acclaimed Writers/Artists Highwater Ell, Kandace Siobhan Walker and many others as they take us on a journey of discovery through the transformative power of poetry. 'Reclaiming Narratives' will present established and new writers to share original works that illuminate the rich, complex and hidden stories of Black people connected to St Alfege Church.

'Reclaiming Narratives: commonly called by the name of Esther Smith' takes inspiration from an original document at Lambeth Palace Library: 'Petition from Esther Smith, a slave, to Archbishop Secker, 19 July 1760'. In this petition, Esther asked to be baptised at St Alfege Church, but her enslaver opposed her baptism.

A small publication will be available in the evening.

Crypt will be open for visits from 6pm to 6.30pm.

Reading will start at 6.30pm followed by refreshments.

Reclaiming Narratives: commonly called by the name of Esther Smith is funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich for Black History 365.
