Remebering Stanley Royd
Clock Tower, Tuke Grove, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 4AF
From it’s opening in 1818 to it’s final closure in 1995 Stanley Royd was Wakefield’s mental health hospital.
At it’s peak it was home to over 2,000 people and workplace for a similar number.
Local Councillor David Pickersgill worked there as a Student Nurse, Staff Nurse and union Branch Secretary in it’s final decade.
In this short guided walk we will explore the growth of the hospital from it’s original building (that still remains, now converted into flats) to a near self-sufficient community the size of a large village.
We will explore what now remains of the site and what wards and other facilities were there before.
Follow signs for Destiny Church (which uses the former hospital theatre) and meet by the old Clock Tower at 1800.
There is limited free parking on site after 1600. The route is suitable for wheelchair users.
The talk is intended for ages 13+ though accompanied younger children are welcome at parental discretion.
The walk should take about 45 minutes.
(Please note that we will talk about treatments and sometimes use the language of previous times, which are not what would be used today).
