‘Ribbons and Risings’: An experiment in collaborative audio description
Leeds Playhouse, Quarry Hill, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7BS
In April, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park hosted a one-day workshop on new and experimental techniques to describe, interpret and share experiences of sculpture. This workshop was part of a three-year research project, Beyond the Visual: Blindness and Expanded Sculpture. The project will culminate with an exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute (November 2025-March 2026).
This event provides an opportunity to explore ways in which words, sound and touch can enhance a collective appreciation of two modern public art installations in Leeds: Pippa Hale’s ‘Ribbons’ (2024); and Yinka Shonibare’s ‘Hibiscus Rising’ (2023). It will also hopefully provoke questions and discussions about the relationship between sculpture and architecture to link with this year's theme.
Meet outside the top entrance to the Leeds Playhouse (Quarry Hill) at 11.00am to explore Pippa Hale’s ‘Ribbons’;
Finish by 12.30pm at Aire Park, Meadow Lane by Yinka Shonibare’s ‘Hibiscus Rising’.
The walk from Quarry Hill to Aire park is wheelchair/buggy friendly.
There is some blue badge parking available at Quarry Hill.
There is seating available at Quarry Hill and at Aire Park, from which the works of art can be viewed.
It is hoped that all people (including blind, partially blind and sighted people) will be able to take part in this event.
