Rowledge and the Church of St. James
St. James Church, Church Lane, Rowledge, Farnham, Surrey, GU10 4EN
The Church of St James in Rowledge is neither historic, nor magnificant, unlike St Andrews. But it is a pleasant church, designed by G H Howell, the great Victorian architect of lunatic asylums. It was one of two hundred or so churches erected under the inspiration of Charles Sumner, the great Victorian Bishop of Winchester. The model was always the same - to cope with an expanding population by building a new church, school and parsonage. These, together, constituted Victorian society in microcosm.
The event will involve a short talk on the history of the church and parish, both established in 1871, a walk around the church and graveyard, and will end with ‘wine and lunch (sandwiches)’ in the Old Vicarage opposite the church, which, though modest, exhibits some characteristic features of a small and modest Victorian parsonage.
