Saddleworth St Chad Parish Church
Church Lane, Uppermill, Oldham, Greater Manchester, OL36LW
The original Church, built around 1215 CE, was positioned on what was an ancient route through the area from Yorkshire to Cheshire and Derbyshire. This route was said to have been roman, passing from Standedge, to the Fort at Castleshaw and onwards to Pobgreen.
The Church is situated in a Conservation area and surrounded on two sides by the original burial ground. On your approach from Uppermill there is a further splendid churchyard that visitors are now able to access. Saddleworth Church is listed by Historic England as a Grade II* building ‘at risk’. This means that the building, along with its churchyards are of special interest and warranting every effort to preserve. Altered significantly in 1831-33, the Church is prominently perched on the hillside above Uppermill, adjacent to the moor.
Visitors old and new will be delighted to experience the progress we have made to provide tranquil open spaces and improve access to our heritage. Watch out for special events this week, Eventbrite.

Our churchyards are situated in an upland location and as such are subject to sudden variations in weather conditions. Consequently, all persons should ensure that they are adequately prepared. Exercise caution due to the age and steep topography. It can be very wet and slippery.
