Saint Bartholomew's Hospital

St Bartholomew's Hospital is believed to have been founded in 1190 by local benefactors. It was based outside the old town walls, offering shelter to pilgrims going to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury, and also provided accommodation and welfare for the elderly of the town. The area has the 13th century chapel at its heart, with 16 houses surrounding it, which still provide accommodation today for the elderly of the town, who are known as Brothers and Sisters. The houses have replaced the Dormitories and Hall from medieval times.
A 'St Bart's Run' is still held every year with local children running around the outside of the Chapel to collect their 'St Bart's Bun', as a symbol of that hospitality.
There is very much more to learn about this historic building, which has served the people of Sandwich for over 800 years.
