Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Mary Magdalene Parish Church, Goldthorpe
Goldthopre Parish Church, Lockwood Road, Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire, S63 9JY
Goldthorpe Parish Church is one of the first concrete churches built in England. Built using this new material in the middle of the WWI, it was a gift to the people of Goldthorpe by the 2nd Viscount of Halifax, who at the time lived at Hickleton Hall. The rather simple exterior of the church, hidden in one of Goldthorpe's side streets (although the main route to the pit when built), belies the extradentary Italianate interior, with Baroque touches.
The village's War Memorial is located inside the church, as is the book of remembrance of those that died working in the local Coal Industry, having worked at Hickleton Main Colliery, Barnburgh Main Colliery, Goldthorpe Colliery and Highgate Colliery. This holds a special place below a memorial window that would installed in the 2002.
The 2nd Viscount wanted this gift to the people of Goldthorpe, who spent so much time in the dark below ground mining, to be a splendid foretaste of heaven. Something that the congregation 110 years later enjoy and are pleased to share.
