Saltford Brass Mill

Saltford Brass Mill, The Shallows, Saltford, Somerset, BS31 3EX

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Ancient Monument and Listed (Grade II*) remnant of the brass industry which thrived in the Avon Valley in the 18th & 19th Centuries. We show how the mill worked and how it came to survive into the 21st Century when 32 other works were left to ruin.

In the Mill, there are full-scale replicas of a water-powered brass hammer and rolling mill, and interactive computer-controlled dioramas of a hammer and a rolling mill. Our 18ft cast iron waterwheel powers a 1928 Ediswan dynamo generating carbon-zero energy. In the garden, there are five working scale models of different types of waterwheels. Guides are available as well as free to use Audio Guides, as well as QR codes to the audio descriptions using your own smartphones. For our younger visitors, we have Brass rubbing, a nature search checklist, and access to our Otter visitor videos.

Accessibility details

The Brass Mill is a Monument and not a Musuem and its current structure dates back to 1721. There are some uneven floors, a few high steps and some low beams. There is no heating or fresh water so there are no toilets or refreshments. Public toilets are some 200 metres away by the Shallows car park. There are two public houses nearby with large car parks, one with a large play area, plenty of outside tables and usual pub food and drink. One also has some superb riverside views. Immediately next to the Mill there is a Residents Parking Area where we believe cars with Blue Badges can park.

Additional information

The Brass Mill is cared for and prepared to accepth visitors by a dedicated group of volunteers. The Local Council has the responsibility for any structural repairs or maintenance needed. In the last two years the Mill was flooded to waist level no less than four times and a lot of work has gone on to clean up after these events and to get the Mill ready for visitors. We are always looking for more members to continue this work and make the site and all its history available for everyone.
