The museum tells the story of the ancient town of Sandwich through the ages from its very early beginnings up until World War II. See Roman treasures, medieval documents , unusual artefacts & the stories of remarkable people connected to Sandwich.

The museum's displays include a 1st century A.D. Roman bowl, the Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest, historic trading tokens, seals & scales & impressive civic treasures including a medieval moot horn and gilded maces dating from the 16th century. Explore the 16th century courtroom and uncover the secrets hidden within this fascinating space. Find out why there are metal spikes behind the dock where the accused stood (it's not to stop them escaping!) and why the mayor shown in the stained glass window is wearing red robes, despite the traditional black robes of the Mayors of Sandwich. Follow the unexpected connections between Sandwich & the wider world. Discover what Thomas Paine, author of 'The Rights of Man', had to do with the town; why inventor Robert Foulton's experimental torpedo boat of 1802 is displayed here, & the story of the Kitchener Camp, where about 4000 Jewish refugees found safety here in 1938. Discover some of the museum's more unusual objects too, including a dried mummified rat & the surprising story of why it belongs in the collection & how it connects to Medieval Sandwich.
