Celebrate 30 years of The Golden Hinde in Bankside with a hands-on family workshop inspired by the traditional skills and craftsmanship that have kept this iconic Tudor ship sailing for generations.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026 and this year's theme of Everyday Histories, discover the practical skills that would have been part of everyday life aboard a historic sailing ship through a choice of two creative workshops.

10.00am – Ropecraft Workshop
Learn the art of traditional ropework and make your own rope bracelet to take home using techniques inspired by life at sea.

11.00am – Scrimshaw Workshop
Discover the history of scrimshaw before creating your own sculpture inspired by Arctic wildlife or trying your hand at carving soap scrimshaw using animal-friendly materials.

Both workshops take place in the atmospheric surroundings of The Golden Hinde, where families can explore the ship before or after their session and discover the remarkable story of Sir Francis Drake's famous voyage.

Perfect for families with children aged 6+, these relaxed workshops encourage creativity, curiosity and hands-on learning while celebrating the everyday crafts and traditions that helped keep historic ships at sea.
