Signal Box and Community Garden, Warmley. Open to the public with demonstration
Warmley Signal Box, High Street, Warmley, Bristol, Bristol, BS15 4ND
This Grade II-listed Midland Railway Signal Box will be open for visitors. It has recently been restored to mirror how it would have looked in the early 1960's when it was a fully operating Signal Box. Volunteers will be available on the day to demonstrate how the levers worked. A replica Signal Arm has been constructed nearby, and the volunteers will demonstrate how it would have worked when fully operational. On the lower level of the Signal Box, the weights can be viewed. There are also information boards, populated with the history of the Midland Railway in the local area, and the life history of the Warmley Signal Box. Several of our volunteers are retired railway Signal Box operators, and, therefore, have expert knowledge.
There is a pleasant Community Garden beside the Signal Box, and, the nearby Waiting Room Cafe situated on the platform of the old Warmley Railway Station, provides excellent refreshments. It is situated alongside the Bristol/Bath Railway Path - a short distance from Avon Valley Railway near Bitton.
Significant restoration work is planned for the autumn by South Gloucestershire Council to preserve and protect this iconic building which along with the Waiting Room are the only two remaining Midland Railway buildings in the local area. Infact, the Signal Box is the only one of its type (4D), preserved on its original site and in its original context, with its original levers, anywhere south of Nottingham.

The upper floor of the Signal Box is accessed via steps. The lower level within the pallisade is accessible via wheelchair. However, the surface is gravel. Across the road are public toilets and, nearby the Waiting Room Cafe and gardens. Parking including spaces for blue badge holders is also across the road.
There will be a small fundraising table in the Community Garden selling plants and preserves - all proceed towards the upkeep of the Signal Box and Gardens.
