The history of Sir Charles Lucas (1613-1648) and his heritage, with associated portraits (Dobson, Lely, Reynolds, Lawrence) and objects.

Join a talk which will explore the history of Sir Charles Lucas, a son of an Essex family of lawyers, who distinguished himself throughout the civil war and was executed at the end of it. His execution became a royalist cause celebre during the Commonwealth; his sister, negotiated a peerage in his honour and a prestigious marriage to the Earl of Kent for his niece Mary following the Restoration. Mary's son was made Duke of Kent, but the title died with him. The Barony of Lucas has traversed seven families since then, as sons died and daughters inherited, accumulating a fine selection of portraits on its way. During this talk, we will look at a number of these paintings and objects, which are based across two rooms.
