Sir Thomas Ingilby explores the colourful life of Rear Admiral Sir Robert Barrie.

Join Sir Thomas Ingilby at All Saints' Church Ripley for this fascinating talk about his relative Rear Admiral Sir Robert Barrie.

At 17, Barrie served as midshipman on the 5-year Vancouver Expedition to survey the coast of North-West Canada. Barrie then commanded warships in both the Napoleonic Wars and the 1812 war with the United States, sinking or capturing many enemy vessels. Post-war, as Commissioner of the Kingston Dockyard, Barrie was the senior naval officer in Canada, with control of the waterways and Port of Quebec. He was promoted to Rear Admiral and knighted.

Sir Robert married Julia Wharton Ingilby in this church in 1816 and in 1841 he was laid to rest next to his wife in the family crypt. The stained-glass window to the left of the altar commemorates his life, yet until now his life story has remained virtually unknown in this, his parish.

The church will also be hosting a flower festival.
