Southwark Ghostsigns – beer and banking, coal and clothing

Follow a trail of old signage and leftover letterform, today commonly known as ghostsigns. These old signs cling to the walls above and along our busy streets, whether hand-painted onto walls, carved into wood, incised into the fabric of a building or forged within metal, promoting products or companies that are no longer available to us today.
On this Southwark route we'll discover signs that advertise hops and shops, boxing and boxes, tea and textiles, lightwells and linctus, churches and chocolate. You'll hear how one company grew rapidly to become a kind of B&Q of its day and how that same site was later used by a huge hospitality company. Hear also about the link between banking, printing and cocoa, say hello to a dog that Dickens knew and visit the site of one of the largest breweries in the country
The tour starts near Southwark tube station and finishes, approx 2 hours later, a few minutes' walk from London Bridge station.
