St Andrews Church Utterby - Bridging Abbey, Church, and Children

Dating back to the 12th century, this charming medieval church welcomes visitors with its ancient stonework, quiet churchyard, and centuries of fascinating stories. Surrounded by trees and wildflowers, the church offers a perfect place for reflection, photography, and discovering England’s rural heritage.
Inside, visitors can admire beautifully carved woodwork, stained glass, medieval memorials, and outside, curious details such as the famous “Devil’s Doorway” — traditionally left open during baptisms to let evil spirits escape. The ornate porch carvings include monkeys, foxes, leaves, and mysterious faces that have watched over the village for hundreds of years.
Our exhibition, created by local children through play, storytelling and handicrafts, explores the connections between the village church, the monks who helped build it, and the nuns from the nearby abbey who were part of its history. The children have also shown great interest in the adjacent pack horse bridge, discovering how it linked the village to daily life and travel in medieval times.
Children's handicraft activities will be available for visitors to 'have a go' and there will be homemade refreshments on sale.
