Open day and tower tours, St Andrew's Greystoke
St Andrew's Church, Church Road, Greystoke, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 0TL
Come and explore the ancient and impressive church of St Andrew's, Greystoke. FOSAB (the Friends of St Andrew's Building) will be on hand to explain some of the interesting features of the church, its history and the people who've worshiped here over the last 800 years. You'll discover:
•How Oliver Cromwell turned our east window into a huge jigsaw
•Exactly what's hiding under the choir stalls
•How local prisoners of war passed their time in the 1940s
•How the church would have been different before the time of murderous King Henry VIII
•Who Meghan and Ella are, how they sing and why they haven't left the building in 25 years
You'll be able to climb the tower to see the bells, find out how they're rung and learn about the unique art of change ringing. There's also plenty of interesting art and architecture around the church, from our historic stained glass to the moving 20th century sculpture of Christ by Josefina de Vasconcellos. We'll explain how the church is looked after and maintained today to ensure it's here for the people of Greystoke for the next 800 years.
Refreshments will be available.
