St. Augustine's Abbey
St. Augustines Abbey, Longport, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 1PF
Founded in AD 598 by St Augustine himself, this historic abbey marks the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. A cornerstone of the Canterbury World Heritage Site, it was the 6th-century home of a mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons and grew into a major centre of learning and spirituality for centuries. Visitors can explore its remarkable ruins and imagine the abbey’s fascinating past—it may even have been the birthplace of the Bayeux Tapestry.
