St Augustine's Church, Wrangthorn

Either wander alone or with a congregation member and discover the delights of this great church.

Built between 1870 and 1871, St Augustine's was built in the great Victorian Gothic Revival style. With an 186 foot tower, this is a building of great scale and splendour, designed by James Barlow Fraser, with an elegant interior.

With the original pews and few alterations, the church remains as built.

From elaborate mosaics on the reredos and the pulpit to beautiful stained glass windows, come and discover the church's delights. The painted vaulted roof of the chancel with the crown of thorns directly above the altar is a highlight, as are the finely carved heads of the Apostles and the statue of St Augustine. The font's lid is rare in using a pulley system. Additionally, the church contains items, including the altar, from the now-redundant St Mark's Church in Woodhouse.

Will you also be able to find the two green men hidden high above, or a rarely seen depiction of a pelican in Christian symbolism?

On display in the church will be photographs, paintings and other items from the church's past, giving visitors the rare chance to explore the human history of the building.

Wrangthorn is a building which epitomises the spirit of the people of Leeds, with their determination and fundraising ensuring the church was built to a high quality inside and out, and has ensured the church has remained an active community asset for over 150 years.
